Kim: Stop using the word Black as loosely as people use the term, Mexican. Africans aren't Black. As Black people, WE get to choose who we see as one of us. You aren't in this village, so stop assuming our identity because it's popular now. By doing so, you're taking part in our genocide. Respect our culture without insisting on having access to it.

Zakiya: Define black. Define African. Define first generation Liberians in America.

Kim: First, Black is capitalized. Secondly, my job isn't to educate you - especially on command. Define yourself, but without appropriating other people's identities altogether.

Zakiya: But that's what you were doing.

Kim: But it's on my terms, not yours. And I get to define Black, not you. Zakiya, this isn't a debate. When someone tells you your actions are hurtful, listen. It's not my responsibility to educate you, but please exercise some humility when I do. Black people, unlike you, are literally fighting for our lives. You're welcome to identify similarities between our struggles, but to assume our identity is a complete cultural smudge. You aren't in my position.

Zakiya: I'm not your enemy.

Kim: Then be a good ally.
